Västerås Castle is situated on the banks of the River Svartån close to where the river flows into Lake Mälaren. Construction of the castle was probably started in around the 13th century and major extensions were made in the 16th century. Today the castle includes the county governor’s residence. Engsö Castle, situated about 25 km east of Västerås also dates back to the 13th century. According to legend Engsö Castle is haunted. As night falls, mystical figures emerge from their hiding places and take over the castle.
Tidö Castle is situated around 20 km south west of Västerås. The castle has become well known in Sweden as the setting for the TV series, ‘Riket’ (The Kingdom). The castle dates back to the 17th century and much of it is still in its original condition. The unusual toy museum attracts many visitors every season.
