From time immemorial Lake Mälaren has been on important waterway for the transport of people and goods. Västerås is, in fact, North Europe’s largest inland port.
Over the years there have been catering and bars on many of the islands. Amongst the better known is the island of Elba in Västerås archipelago. In 1830 facilities were opened for serving alcohol, playing skittles and dancing. At the end of the 1880s the steamer Märta, owned by the distillery company Spritbolaget, was introduced for transportation. Västerås City took over both the island and the catering in 1899 so as to get control of the consumption of alcohol. In 1917 the City bought the Elba ferry vessel. This proved so popular that more space was required and in 1926 the vessel was extended to its present form.
